7/26 - Distracted from What? - Peter van Dusen "But Peter," friends ask me (naturally enough), "What does a Culture of Distraction distract us FROM?" Trying to answer this question took me back to a tetralogy of books by Daniel Quinn: "Ishmael," "The Story of B," "My Ishmael," and "Beyond Civilization." I read all of them when they came out in the 1990s, and I cannot believe I let them languish for so long before returning to reread them in their entirety this spring. It's been an electrifying experience--I have never encountered a critique of modern culture as deeply and solidly grounded as this. After Services join us for Yoga with Kitty Bevis at 1:30.

7/12 - The Culture of Distraction - Peter van Dusen In January, I read a sociological study of the Amish. I did not expect the profound effect it had on me. I grew up an hour away from Lancaster, PA, and have own about the Amish for many years, so it was startling to find myself being effected in such a way. Subsequent reflections have crystallized my thoughts about numerous aspects of our media, education, politics and culture in general. It also brought to the fore an idea called "social capital," which of course prompted more reading! After Services join us for Yoga with Kitty Bevis at 1:30 and Men's Group at 6:30.

7/5 - Urgency, Reaction and Faith - Rev. Phil Schulman
How often are we in a reactive mode, seeing things we don't like and railing against them? How often do we proceed from a song, dream or vision that arises in us, and stroll gently down the path toward fulfillment. Can we learn to act more often from our faith than from fear? After Services join us for Brown Bag Socrates Café at 12:15 and Yoga with Kitty Bevis at 1:30.

6/28 - A Liberal Religious Perspective on Immigration - Steve Botts
The sermon today was written by Roger Fritts and was first presented at Cedar Lane Unitarian-Universalist Church in Bethesda, Maryland on March 8, 2009.
People come to this country to realize the American Dream and enhance the quality of their lives, but whether and under what conditions we are to accept immigrants is no simple matter, and there are several valid points of view to be considered. Come to hear some immigration stories and see which make the most sense to you. After Services join us for Men's Group at 6:30 p.m.

6/21 - Good Lives for Dads - Rev. Phil Schulman Males are deeply conditioned into an orientation of dominance. We end up dominating and forcing ourselves to buck up and get with the program. Can dads learn to influence themselves and their children with ease, love and cooperation? Can men move from inspiration with less perspiration? As a gift to fathers, let's support and encourage them to lead lives more deeply connected to children, community and faith.
