How Can We Make Our Church Work Better for Us?

Let's talk about this on Saturday, February 17, 2001. Everyone is invited to the home of Henry and Jean Halff, 9 Villa Verde. We'll begin at 9:00 a.m., break for lunch, and be through by 2:00 p.m. June Kachtik will serve as facilitator. Lunch and child care will be provided.

Your participation in this workshop is important. This workshop is designed to solicit everyone's input and to work toward decisions supported by the group that will make our church a better community for us. Please come.

If you can, let Henry (henry@quiensabe.com, 210-492-7501) know if you're planning to come and how many children you're bringing.

The Halffs live at 9 Villa Verde in the Elm Creek subdivision at Lockhill-Selma and Wurzbach.

If you're coming from the North, go South on Lockhill-Selma at Huebner. Take a right at the second light (Hunters Circle to the left, Elm Creek to the right). Tell the guard you're visiting the Halffs. Take the second left onto Villa Hermosa, a left at the circle (Villa Jardin, unmarked) and a right at the T onto Villa Verde. Drive to the end of the street, keeping to the left of the mailbox island and look for Number 9 on your right.

From the South, turn North onto Elm Creek from Wurzbach, the first right West of Lockhill-Selma, about 2 miles East of I-10. Tell the guard you're visiting the Halffs. Turn right at the second stop sign (about 1 mi.) onto Villa Hermosa. Take a left at the circle (Villa Jardin, unmarked) and a right at the T onto Villa Verde. Drive to the end of the street, keeping to the left of the mailbox island and look for Number 9 on your right.

News from Leah

My 91 year old mother and I had a long talk and she believes I need a real vacation before I get too old to enjoy a long trip. Hence, I shall be going to China on June 18th and returning on July 4th or so. If anyone has been there and can offer some insight as to what an enjoyable trip might include, please feel free to make recommendations. I shall be taking a trip called Yangtze Sampler with an additional side trip to Hong Kong. Luckily I know a family in Hong Kong and they have offered to be a tour guide there.

On February 18, Sheron Antczak will present a worship service on "Shared Jerusalem" that seems particularly relevant given current events in the Middle East (service coordinator is Jensie Madden). The Wired Congregation

Spiritual resources (including some just for CUUC) abound on the Internet. If you have the feeling that you'd like to be better able to used these resources, or able to use them at all, let us know. Henry Halff and Steve Botts are thinking about offering an adult ed course on the Internet and the church. The course would offer a configuration lab to help people get connected to the Internet, a session on using facilities such as the World Wide Web and Internet mailing lists, and a session devoted specifically to spiritual resources that can be found on the Internet. If you're interested, get in touch with Henry (210-490-7501, henry@quiensabe.com).

Request from Dave

Please be aware of what you are leaving behind. In recent weeks I have found the microwave oven open, wrappers from popcorn on the counter, dirty knives left on the kitchen island (dangerous with kids around) and assorted items left on the kitchen island. Please return items to their homes. Your cooperation is very much appreciated! Another kind reminder, please ring the bell or call me (692-9102) if you are entering (unscheduled) the church after dark.

RE Corner

TETS have continued their study of religions, including Paganism, African Religions,Jainism and at this time, studying Native American Religions. Thank you Ben Batschelet, Lisa Kuntz and Jensie Madden for your time. Our Lower elementary students have continued with the We Believe curriculum. Thank you again Sandi Boyd for the wonderful job you are doing. Many parents have commented on the fact that their children look forward to RE at CUUC. We value each and everyone of our children and hearing this is "music to our ears".

Joan Bradshaw has recently developed a program for our youngest members (ages 3 and under). Unfortunately, we are in desperate need for teachers. If you are interested please call, email me or just sign your name on the poster board in the foyer. This not strictly a childcare program but is a program designed for very young children to follow and enjoy. Curriculum will be provided. I must thank Joan for all her work in this area. This Sunday, February 4, we finally buried our 2000 time capsule. Catherine Mckee will be working on a small plaque, so hopefully we won't be part of the 75% of time capsules never opened because no one remembers where they are. Last but not least, John and Joan Bradshaw, Sandi and Steve Boyd and Joan's grandson worked very hard last Saturday to spruce up the playground. Even if you have no children, take a look at it. It looks fabulous. We should thank them all for their hard work in making the playground a safer and beautiful place for the children to play in.

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!!

What Brings Us to CUUC?

At the January 9, 2000 service, each member of the congregation wrote on a card what, of a spiritual nature, brought them to church. Because the answers to this question tell us a good deal about ourselves, we publish one of them in each newsletter. We welcome any additional contributions from those not in attendance at the service, or those who were.

Here is February 2001's selection.

The church provides a safe haven for friendship, fellowship, and spiritual growth with like minded people.
