Nosotros, las congregaciones miembros de la Asociación UU, convenimos en afirmar y formentar el valor y la dignidad propria de cada persona.
The service on Sunday, June 22, will be a devoted to the Social Action Issues and the Statement of Conscience under consideration at GA. If you don't know what this means, here is a summary.
Every year, the UUA solicits Social Action Issues from its congregations. These issues are those might call upon our collective conscience for action. Five such issues are selected for further consideration at GA. The delegates then select a single issue that becomes the basis for a Statement of Conscience. The Statement of Conscience is then refined during the following year and at the following GA. It is then adopted by the Association.
Because we are sending delegates to GA this year, they need your input concerning the candidate Social Action Issues and the Statement of Conscience selected last year. The service on June 22 will be your chance to provide them with guidance.
The Social Action Issues under consideration this year concern
The Statement of Conscience under consideration this year concerns Economic Globalization.
More information on each of these issues is available at The UUA Commission on Social Witness' web site at http://www.uua.org/csw/. A copy of the UUA agenda, along with the Social Action Issues and Statement of Conscience will be available at the church on Sunday, June 15.
If you have a desire to participate in the Operations and Maintenance functions of CUUC, please plan on attending the first meeting of the year to be held after brunch on Sunday, June 15.
The first Summer Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, June 28. This day will be devoted to preparing the pool and grounds for our 4th of July celebration. Specific tasks, and materials/equipment needed to accomplish these tasks will be included on the discussion agenda at our June 15 meeting.

The program committee met after church June 8. We solicit input from members with ideas for forthcoming services. Please let any member of the committee know what service topics you might like to have offered. We also have two open dates available: July 6 and 13 (a brunch Sunday) Would any member of the congregation be interested in providing a service on either of those dates on UUHA and /or housing more generally? Please let Steve Boyd know.

The Member Services Committee, linchpin of the church's operations and the rockin'est group in the church again shows that it is on the leading edge of UU member service organizations by taking bold action to institute REGULAR MONTHLY MEETINGS (ta-da!). These REGULAR MONTHLY MEETINGS will take place after services on the fourth Sunday of every month, and the first is scheduled for June 22 at 1:00 PM. To be part of this exciting group, all you need do is show up at the meeting. We'll take care of the rest. You'll find exciting opportunities in several areas:
Contact the coordinator, Henry Halff (214-521-0448, henry@quiensabe.com) for further information and often correct answers to questions.
June 15 will be the Ops & Maintenance Committee Meeting, following brunch
June 28 will be the Summer Clean-up Day, in anticipation of the 4th of July. It will start at 9:00 a.m., but workers may arrive throughout the day. Dress to work outside.
4th of July - Potluck salads and dessert, bring your own meat to B-B-Que. Contact Sue Minton (210-679-7958, minton22@yahoo.com) if you would like to participate with set-up, small decoration effort, etc.
Lawn Mowing Schedule: Sign-up on Coffee Room Bulletin Board. Two week time slots, with volunteers asked to monitor the lawn and mow once, sometime during that time period, as needed.
The first in a series of four CUUC-sponsored colloquia on state, national, and world social justice issues is tentatively scheduled for June 25, 7:00 p.m. An attorney from the ACLU will provide a presentation and lead a discussion on the Patriot Act 1 and the proposed Patriot Act 2. These acts are legislative responses to the threat of terrorism. They give the government broad authority to scrutinize individual citizens' behavior. If you're concerned about the balance of individual rights to privacy and the authority of government to protect the public, put this date on the calendar.
Other colloquia in the series will be chosen and scheduled to meet the interests and needs of the congregation. If you have suggestions or questions, contact Sue Minton (210-679-7958, minton22@yahoo.com).
Re: A Concrete Thing You Can Do
One of the interesting things to me about everyone's reaction to the UUA's president's article in the UU World, in which he gives his "elevator definition" of Unitarian Universalism, is our response to the questions: Who are we? Who are we really? If we can figure that out, will it affect our efforts to attract members? Let me make my disclaimers. I suspect that we can have a thought-provoking, soul-searching discussion about our "image" as UU's, and end up better for it individually but not necessarily make any substantial changes collectively. Would that process attract new members? I'm not sure, but wouldn't we have fun? I can suggest one concrete step that we can take right now to attract more people to our church. Let's all invite some friends and acquaintances to the forum to be held on June 25. The Patriot Act I and II (proposed) is of interest to us all, and I'll bet you know of others too. Well, ASK THEM! See you on the 25th! See the article in the newsletter for more details. -June Kachtik
