Wanted: Social Justice Coordinator

At our spring retreat we said we would like to get re-involved this year in social justice activities. And, we've begun to act:

*Youth Alternatives kids joined us for our July 4th celebration. Everyone had a great time! *We will have a series of Social Justice forums. The first was held on June 25, and 14 guests from the community attended. Patrick Filyk, an attorney and leader in the local American Civil Liberties Union spoke about the possible impacts of Patriot Act I and II on our individual, fundamental rights. When asked what we could do, he suggested that we join the ACLU, look at their website http://www.aclu.org, write our congress members, and support a resolution which will be going to the San Antonio City Council. *Henry Halff presented the UUA resolutions to the congregation on June 22. It gave us the opportunity to come up with some practical activities that we could engage in right now, including

There are several members of our congregation who are working on various activities related to social justice. But, we have no "home" for this activity within our three-committee structure. If you would be willing to act as a coordinator, please contact me at junekac@aol.com or by calling 342-0135.

REmarks

Summer is a time to relax and rejuvenate. Our casual program is progressing well, but more sign-ups for supervising the children are needed. The worship leaders need to know before the service begins as to whether the children will have an activity or if they should stay in the service with their parents until it is over. Thanks for your cooperation. Also, I have been counting the promised CATS in my inventory but have not, as yet, received them all. If you still want to contribute, please get it to me before my final listing of titles which should be out around the second week in August. Also, available at that time will be a sign-up sheet for the presentation of the CAT lessons for the coming year. Interesting and challenging experiences related to the seven UU Principles are included. Happy Summering, Joan Bradshaw

From The President's Keyboard

There's good work galore going on within our UU and local communities. Let me list a few of the requests we have received lately. You may wish to make your financial contribution or commitment of time to these efforts:

The first two are not directly related to our denomination, but they help to highlight our name in the community by listing UU Community Church as a contributing sponsor. They are:

A. Texas Public Radio: Texas public radio (TPR) is a community membership supported service that offers two separate FM stations in San Antonio. A business membership costs $500 per year. If ten of us who wish to support TPR for $50 a year can pool our contributions at the church, the church can then become a business member and be mentioned periodically on the air. This is a good outreach effort towards certain specific populations. As a business member, two people from the church can go to special functions offered by TPR for business members only. However, if you choose to support TPR through the church, you will not be given an individual membership card. The church gets two membership cards that members can sign out for a definite period of time. You can still call and sign up for activities offered by TPR for their members. Just mention that you are part of the CUUC business membership. You also will not be sent a monthly copy of the "Key", a magazine for members, but you can sign up to receive it on-line.

The deadline for this year's membership is August 31. If you are interested, please sign up with Clem Chow. You can write your check to CUUC with TPR membership designated on the memo line. After we received ten members' contributions, the church will then sign up as a business member. If you have any questions, please refer them to Clem.

B. Gemini Ink: Gemini Ink is a non profit organization in San Antonio that is a literary arts center. It has served over 3,900 aspiring writers, book lovers, theater audience members, teachers, parents, scholars, students, low-income senior citizens, and at-risk youth in 2002 through its three major components - the University Without Walls program, the Writers in Communities program, and the Dramatic Reader's Theater.

Gemini Ink will hold its annual fundraiser on September 14, 2003, at the Witte Museum and is looking for underwriters. I plan to make a contribution. If anyone else would like to, please contact me; and I will coordinate the giving so that Community UU Church will be listed as a sponsor.

Here are other requests that have been received:

A. Chalice Lighters of the Southwest Unitarian Universalist Conference UU's in our district help each other by making contributions of $10 or more annually. These funds are channeled to one church each year. We have received funds in the past. This year the grant funds will be used by the UU church in Corpus Christi to create a second service for their congregation. Mail your check to: SWUUC Office, 6720 Brentwood Stair Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76112

B. Unitarian Universalist Women's Heritage Society The Society's mission is to reclaim, communicate, and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of Universalist and Unitarian women. It offers a newsletter and publications and products, which can be purchased at a 10% discount and resold at full price as a part of church sponsored activities. If you are interested in being a Sustaining Member (at $75.00) and a contact for the Society within our church, please pick up the form from Marilyn DeKing.

C. RESULTS and UU RESULTS is a volunteer based, citizen lobby, dedicated to creating the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty. Mark Coats is coordinating the Texas RESULTS teams and will be in San Antonio on July 17, 2003. He is meeting with all those who would like to connect with their elected officials to lobby on behalf of the poor everywhere. The meeting will be held from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at the Peace Center, 1443 S. St. Mary's Street. For more information, contact: http://www.uua.org/uuawo/results.

D. UU movement in South Africa If you wish to purchase Unitarian Greeting Cards to help promote the growth of the UU movement in South Africa, please contact: http://unitarian.co.za/unitarian-greetings-cards.html or via its home page at http://wwww.unitarian.co.za.
