Kids and Karma Kredit
Watch for a BIG announcement for RE next month. Negotiations are progressing well but cannot be finalized until the August Board meeting. To be a part of this exciting new year, start thinking seriously about your participation in our Cooperative Religious Education Program. Sandi Boyd will need alternate teachers in the early elementary class and units on Native American Religions, Jainism and Sikhism, Islam, African Religions and Hinduism are still available. Catherine McKee has agreed to start off this BIG year of World Religions by introducing the children to Buddhism. Note that Sign-up Sunday is August 27th but I am available for consultation any appointed time before that. The pay is not great but we do promise to provide support, a bunch of terrific KIDS and KARMAKREDIT.
Building and Grounds Close-Up
This is a reminder that close-up is important. Generally the person responsible for worship is responsible for doing Sunday close-up themselves, or getting someone who will do it. In all cases, however, the last one out should turn off the Sanctuary/ Foyer A/C's, unplug the coffee pots, turn off lights, and lock all doors. We also want the gates closed and the pool locked when unoccupied. We have recently had the sanctuary left A/C on, the coffee pots left on, the pool left unlocked and the gate at fireplace side of building left open. Please, everybody help. John Bradshaw; Building Committee Chair
District Activities
The Southwest UU District holds many events during the year which offer opportunities for personal spiritual growth and for leadership growth. If you have never attended a district-wide event, consider one of the following. Save the dates.
Fall Conference, Nov 10-12, 2000, 1st UU Church, Dallas, "Living La Vida UU" with the Rev. Tony Larsen.
Small Church Conference, Jan 19-20, Horizon Church, Dallas area, "Who Are We and Where Are We Going?"
Religious Education Conference, Feb 9-11, Camp Copass, near Denton, TX. Theme speaker Jacqui James from the UUA.
Women's Conference, Feb 9-11, Little Rock, Arkansas, "Women in Their Natural State."
Spring Conference, April 20-22, Baton Rouge, LA, "Sounds of the Spirit."
Remarkable Films
Join us for another remarkable film after the Labor Day picnic, Monday, September 4th. Raise the Red Lantern, a beautiful Chinese film, will be shown at about 7:00 P.M., allowing us time to help with cleanup after dinner. A discussion will follow the film. Videos will be available for children, but there is no babysitter provided. Questions? Contact Catherine McKee at 681-4197.
Upcoming Committee Meetings
Worship, August 13, 12:00
Religious Education, August 13, 12:00
Board of Trustees, August 8, 7 p.m.
Board and Council Meeting (committee chairs), August 26, 11 a.m.
Film Strip Projector?
We will be needing a film strip projector for isolated Sundays this coming year for the World Religions curriculum. Does anyone have access to one that we could use on two weeks notice? Permanent loan would be even better.
Labor Day Picnic
Our traditional Labor Day Picnic is scheduled for Monday, September 4th starting at 3:00 P.M. Bring something to grill and a dish to share with others. The grill will be ready for cooking at 5 P.M. The pool will be open and there will be other games and activities available. Come, enjoy a relaxing afternoon. Perhaps you'll get to know someone new or something new about an old friend. Questions? Contact Sally Wiesen, 256-9732 or Lisa Kuntz, 493-8092.
From Surviving to Thriving
September 16-18, 2000 a National Conference about Welfare Reform will be held at the Marriott at Metro Center, Washington, D.C. Sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and the National Welfare Monitoring and Advocacy Partnership, this conference gives participants the opportunity to help set a national agenda for families working toward self-sufficiency.
Joining a national coalition of people at all income levels that is committed to influencing policy decisons that will shape the next phase of welfare-reform - the federal reauthorization of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, conference participants will develop strategies that will move the national focus beyond reform to a renewal of the family-friendly policies that made the United States great: living wages, adequate affordable housing, quality child care, and quality education. For additional information (including scholarships available), contact Jackie Ladd or Kim McDonald at 800-388-3920, or email jladd@uusc.org, or visit the UUSC web site.

Being away from home for several weeks and out of touch, it was a special treat to read the July newsletter. I was especially touched by the "Top 10 Reasons to work in RE" and the attached graphic describing "why I am a part of CUUC." I felt a personal connection with all of you as I read the newsletter. Thank you for the uplift.

What Brings Us to CUUC?
At the January 9 service, each member of the congregation wrote on a card what, of a spiritual nature, brought them to church. Because the answers to this question tell us a good deal about ourselves, we publish one of them in each newsletter. We welcome any additional contributions from those not in attendance at the January 9 service, or those who were.
Here is August's selection.
It's part of my life. On a good Sunday it inspires me & gives me a sense of community--of being part of a larger "family." On a less good Sunday, it irritates the hell out of me. But I can't not come. You don't opt out of your family because it irritates you sometimes.
