Special Sunday Service

On Sunday, September 16, there will be a "Service of Concern" to share readings, music, and thoughts inspired by the events of this week. If you have readings or music you'd like to share with us, please contact Margaret Batschelet, 655-5646, typea45@swbell.net.

September Work Day

A work day at the church will be held on Saturday, September 15. We are going to work on the roof of the coffee room if it is not raining. There are may other things to do as well. Several member of the church know how to do roofing and we did it for the new church building so if you would like to learn how, come and help out. If you would prefer something inside there will be opportunities of that kind too. We will get an early start at about 8:30 and will try to get finished shortly after lunch. You do not need to bring anything although an extra hammer would be useful if you want to help with the roof.

Remarkable Films

The next film for the "Remarkable Film Series" will be the Brazilian drama Central Station. The film was awarded the Golden Globe in 1998 for Best Foreign Language Film. It also was nominated for two Academy Awards that year for Best Actress and Best Foreign Language Film. The film is in Portuguese with English subtitles. It will be shown at the church on Sunday, October 7 at 6 PM.

Human Evolution - The Search for Human Origins, A Lecture With Slides

On October 14, Louis W. Cable, a retired geologist, will give a talk on human evolution featuring slides taken in Kenya while he was there prospecting for fossil evidence of the early hominids. The presentation will include an overview of the background and current scientific thinking concerning the origin of modern humans and their evolutionary development plus what my lie as human evolution continues to unfold. There will be an open discussion following the presentation.

Louis Cable: I am proud to be a native of East Texas having been born in Conroe, Texas on May 29, 1923. I graduated from Lufkin (Texas) High School in 1941.In 1942 I enlisted in the U. S. Navy and saw service in the South Pacific during WW II. After the war I enrolled at The University of North Texas at Denton. I later transferred to Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth where I earned an MS in geology. I received an appointment to the U. S. Geological Survey in 1960 and retired from the USGS in 1983.

During my retirement years I have traveled widely throughout the world. This includes two trips to Africa the first of which was to Kenya and Tanzania as a volunteer in the search for evidence of early human evolution. The second trip was to Egypt and Israel in 1994.I traveled to Belize in the summer of 1996 where I took part in an archaeological dig of the ancient Mayan civilization. My wife, Maryjane Cable, and I now reside at our home at 102 Spyglass Dr. in Lufkin, Texas. We have two grown children and a granddaughter.

Interactive Website on International Affairs

I feel that the events of 09/11/01 in New York and Washington define a New World Order that will affect our lives as much as the events of 12/07/41 affected our parents' generation. We will see a different kind of National Security and World security come into play. Boundaries will be in a different dimension. International relations will change.

It is important that as this happens, it is tempered with social consciousness and respect for our humanity. As UU's we need to be talking about this. I have created an interactive website where this can begin to take place. The address is
