Fall Leadership Conference
The Rev. Dr. Tony Larson, infamous for his "UU Revivals" will be the keynote speaker at the annual Fall Leadership Conference being held this year at First Unitarian Church, Dallas, November 10-12. The weekend promises to be full of inspirational messages, workshops on all aspects of the church, fellowship, and fun.
The conference brochure, available at CUUC or on the Dallas First Web site at http://www.dallasuu.org/ contains descriptions of the workshops, hotel information, and a registration form. For more information, call Steve Lewis at First U, Dallas, 214-528-3990, e-mail at firstuch@dallasuu.org, or Sue Boone, 972-660-5285, e-mail at suebooneuu@juno.com.
Adult RE
We are planning to start a class based on the book "Your Money or your Life", by Joe Dominguez, which is based on ideas about our relationship with money as presented at the September 17 service by Wayne Thomas. The class will involve seven sessions plus a follow-up meeting the second month after completing the steps, and it will be necessary to purchase a copy of "Your Money or your Life". The price of the book is $13.95 plus tax, which comes to $15.03 by my calculations.
The class is supposed to meet weekly, but I'm not sure this is realistic for us. My thought is that we could meet at church after services on Sundays when that time is not pre-empted for another purpose (i.e., committee meetings, other adult RE, etc.), but I'm flexible about that, and I'd like to hear some feedback from you.
Several people have signed up in the social room at the church, but I would like to hear from everyone who is interested, whether you have signed up or not.
As far as the starting date is concerned, if enough people are interested, we could start on Oct 15. For those who wish to commit to the group, I would be glad to take your money and order the books.
--Steve Botts
Sound System
The church is slowly moving towards the purchase of a sound system. Envisioned are four wireless earphones for the hard of hearing, four speakers for the not-so-hard of hearing, a stereo mixer, base stations for the wireless stuff, a lapel mic and a handheld mic. If you know anything about this stuff or even if you have some uninformed comments, let me (i.e., Henry Halff) know.
Remarkable Films
JThe next film, "Henry Fool" will be shown Sunday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 P.M. Steve Botts will facilitate.
Soup Lunches
Soup lunches will be on the second Sunday of the month. A signup list will be posted for committee chairs. Profits from a soup lunch above a certain amount (TBD) can be spent, by the sponsoring committee, on beer or some other worthwhile enterprise.
Tile-Laying Workday
A Workday for installing Saltillo tile on the coffee room/foyer entry porch is scheduled for Saturday, October 14 from 9:00 AM till ?. Details from John Bradshaw 341-8506.
Dia De Los Muertos, Maybe
Death may be as certain as taxes, but it's commemoration at CUUC may turn into a sometime thing. In years past we have participated in the Latino tradition of celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a party for The Bridge, a place where kids can stay in times when they can't stay at home. This year we've got no one to head up the Dia de los Muertos party, and the board would like to know if anyone in the congregation is willing to take on the responsibility. If you are interested, contact any member of the board (or all of them via an email to cuucboard@egroups.com).
RE
Here is the tentative teaching schedule for the coming year. Thank you
SO much for all who said YES to teaching and YES to our children. If
you see any discrepancies on this list, please talk to me so I can clear
them up. Joan Bradshaw, consultant for the World Religion Curriculum.

All Creatures: A Blessing for Our Pets
The service on October 8 will be an intergenerational blessing of our pets. All animals welcome in your house are welcome in ours, if they want to come and will be comfortable at the service. Those animals who choose not to attend may be represented by words and/or pictures.
Communion will be offered, so please bring a small treat for your pet and a few words on its behalf.
Standards of decorum, such as silence during the service, will be somewhat relaxed, but fights, chases, and other aggressive behavior will not be allowed. Sanitary issues will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Volunteers Wanted
The Extended Care Therapy Center (Nursing Home) of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System is looking for Hospice Unit volunteers with an interest in serving veterans through providing craft classes, baking classes, group music activities, visitation, reminiscence groups, spiritual care, and bereavement follow-up (other special talents will also be considered). Training has been scheduled for October 16, 18, 23, and 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. Please express your interest by contacting Voluntary Service at 210/617-5107.
What Brings Us to CUUC?
At the January 9 service, each member of the congregation wrote on a card what, of a spiritual nature, brought them to church. Because the answers to this question tell us a good deal about ourselves, we publish one of them in each newsletter. We welcome any additional contributions from those not in attendance at the January 9 service, or those who were.
Here is October's selection.
The opportunity to explore different ideas concerning spirituality with open
minds & reason.
