Nosotros, las congregaciones miembros de la Asociación UU, convenimos en afirmar y formentar el valor y la dignidad propria de cada persona.
On Sunday, October 13th, we will host our fourth annual All-Mozart service. Members of the San Antonio Symphony and King William Winds will perform Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, the Dissonant String Quartet, and other selections, in an all-music service beginning at 10:30 am. There is no admission. Donations will be accepted with the morning offering.
In conjunction with the Mozart service we will be having a bake sale as well to benefit the Pastoral Care committee. I will be coordinating that effort so if you would like to help out please let me know.
Some thoughts on the subject...
If you have any questions, suggestions, or know what you are going to donate to this cause, let me know. Estella Boyes, romana_us@yahoo.com!
CUUC has started a monthly soup lunch. This lunch serves mainly to bring us together. It also provides a little sustenance, and it helps keep the church afloat financially. So we urge everyone at church to socialize, eat, and put some cash in the basket. Only the first two activities are mandatory. If you're a visitor here, if you've forgotten your wallet, or if you're running on empty today, forget about the cash; just stick around to talk and eat. If you can afford it, the basket would really appreciate getting $3.50 per grownup and $1.50 per kid. Of course, if you're flush, feel free to put in more; you'll get your money's worth.
A soup lunch is scheduled generally for the first Sunday of each month and a sign-up sheet is placed on the bulletin board next to the main entrance to the Sanctuary. The Board of Trustees will host the soup lunch on November 3. Other dates are open at this time.

The "Remarkable Film Series" will feature "Being There" in October. This understated comedy will round off the theme of Men Messiah. Being there features a remarkable performance by Peter Sellers and he is supported well by Shirley McLaine and Melvyn Douglas. It is directed by Hal Ashby who achieved fame previously with "Harold and Maude," "Shampoo," and "Coming Home." The film will be shown at church on Sunday, October 13 at 6:00 PM.
We have a new pagan/alternative religion group starting at the church. Blue Moon Circle will meet again on Oct 10 at 7pm to continue planning for our Samhain celebration. The Samhain Celebration will be held on Nov 1st also at 7 pm. Anyone who is interested is more than welcome and we have a list http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Blue_Moon_Circle/?yguid=3064149 to use to come up with ideas, suggestions, and to learn.
I am doing the Day of the Dead service on Sunday, Nov 3, and would like to remind everyone to bring a picture or something that they would like to use to remember someone (pets included) for our altar. Estella Boyes.
Now that we are settled, comfortably, and I trust, happily, into our Fall RE Program I would like to remind us of why we are here. The RE Committee has plans and we have goals established in order to assist our children in developing their own religious identity. We are very different from their Monday to Friday school experience and we remain mindful of this fact. Our RE Brochure states that "at CUUC we want to create a ministry of the church to the whole family, the children to want to come and feel that they belong, to integrate ages and to integrate religious education and worship service...We hope that through this process we will not lose the children as they grow older because they are a part of the larger church community and that they will bring a part of themselves to the service." We encourage them to think for themselves, ask for what they want, to develop their individual strengths and to share these with each other. "You and your family are important at CUUC and we hope that you can make a commitment to developing your children;s understanding of UU values, traditions and service." joan bradshaw and the RE Committee that prepared our RE Brochure
I am seeking your help in locating host homes for two exchange students. Takanari is from Japan and Tung is from Viet Nam. They are currently residing with "Welcome Families" and must be moved soon.
A host family consists of at least one adult 25 years of age or older. Our exchange students pass an English competency exam. The exchange student may share a room with a host brother. He has his own spending money and medical insurance. The host family is responsible for only shelter and meals. The host family will receive a tax deduction and the family members are eligible for scholarships to our outbound programs.
For biographies, contact Henry Halff, henry@quiensabe.com. Please, if you know of anyone who might host will you contact either myself, Mari Stolsig, mrstolsig@satx.rr.com at (210) 767-0267 or Chon toll free at 1-866-496-0305?
All: I am putting together the church calendar. If anyone knows of or is planning an event, please email me the information so I can keep a consolidated calendar of events for the church. If anyone knows how the previous calendar was kept and who has it I would appreciate knowing that too. John Wiesen jwiesen@satx.rr.com

UUA President William G. Sinkford has issued a pastoral letter in response to the current U.S. threat of war with Iraq. Sinkford said, "These are frightening, difficult times, and though it would be understandable if we responded out of fear, we are called as religious people to think and speak out of our values and our love for one another. And we are called to ask questions and search for paths that can open the way for peace. These issues can be divisive: our country was deeply divided during the conflict in Vietnam, and such wrenching division can happen again. We must be mindful of our past as we search for a way forward -- in our roles as Unitarian Universalists, as Americans, and as world citizens."
Sinkford continues, "After prayer and reflection, I decided to act, and I want to offer you some possibilities for action as well." Read the complete text of President Sinkford's statement at http://www.uua.org/news/2002/020920.html Extensive links to statements from other faith traditions, worship resources, talking points on the Iraq conflict, UU statements on justice issues, and more are also listed.
