Nosotros, las congregaciones miembros de la Asociación UU, convenimos en afirmar y formentar el valor y la dignidad propria de cada persona.
The Rev. Robert L. Hill, District Executive of the Southwest District of the Unitarian Universalist Association, will lead a start-up workshop for lay leaders and our minister, Dr. Barbara Coeyman, Sunday afternoon, October 26, after a soup lunch until 4 p.m. Hill will ask those present to consider their beliefs and assumptions about the sharing of tasks necessary to the success of our congregation. For what tasks does the minister have primary responsibility? Lay leaders? What tasks must be a shared responsibility? Hill says that, in general, he believes every hour spent in clarifying expectations at the beginning of a ministry saves many hours of painful conflict management later. Especially invited to attend are board members and committee facilitators and members, including the Committee on Ministry.
It's coming! It's coming! On Saturday, November 8, 2003, there will be workshops that we can benefit from dealing with social justice, worship and music, religious education, and church leadership. I encourage you to attend. I know one's first inclination is to say, "I don't need that," or "I don't want to take my time to do that," but the truth is: "Our church does need help." "The church" doesn't attend workshops, we as members who care about our church attend workshops. So, how about it?
There are deep-yellow brochures on the table in the coffee room. Go on, pick one up and fill it out. The cost for local folks is only $25. And, if you want to attend the banquet in the evening, that is another $25. You can also register on-line: http://www.swuuc.org/SanAntonio --June Kachtik
The Remarkable Film Series continues its series on the general theme of "Family" On November 2 at 6:00 PM, the film will be "Monsoon Wedding," the drama about an Indian family preparing for their daughter's wedding to an East Indian man from Texas.

The Member Services Committee meets on the fourth Sunday of every month, after services. The next meeting is on October 26. Contact Henry Halff (210-493-7501, henry@quiensabe.com)
Next Sunday, October 19, is the time when we will recognize all of those members who have never been recognized at a member-recognition service. So that we don't miss any of you, please let us know who you are, even if you can't come to church. Contact Henry Halff (210-493-7501, henry@quiensabe.com) if you are a member who has never been recognized or if you want to become a member.
Do you need a little extra help or do you know someone who does? To contact the pastoral care sub-committee, please call any of the following individuals: Joan Bradshaw at 341-8506, Sue Minton at 679-7598, Catherine McKee at 681-4197 or Sally Wiesen at 256-9732.
Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and we need volunteers for the Thanksgiving Dinner. A signup sheet for volunteers is available in the coffee room. If you're interested, tell us what you can contribute in the way of food.
In addition, it's time, indeed, past time, that we started the monthly soup lunches. These soup lunches will be scheduled for the fourth Sunday of the month, and each group in the church should take responsibility for a single Sunday. If you're a group leader, you can sign your group up on the sign-up sheet in the coffee room.
Finally, Christmas Rev*ls remain a possibility this year, but only if we can find some committed leadership for the project. Christmas Rev*ls are a Renaissance style celebration of the holiday season. Those who attended the 2001 Christmas Rev*ls can appreciate both the fun and hard work involved in the celebration. If you are interested in a leadership role, contact Henry Halff (210-493-7501, henry@quiensabe.com) for more information on the opportunities.
The CUUC Men's Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the church for beer and soda, guy food, and occasional conversation. All male friends and members of the church are urged to attend. The next two meetings are scheduled for October 26 and November 9. Interested men can join the men's group secret mailing list by sending an email to cuuc-men-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Henry Halff (210-493-7501, henry@quiensabe.com) can answer questions and provide further information.
Henry Halff (210-493-7501, henry@quiensabe.com), the member database dad, would like to make sure that every member is getting the UU World magazine. If you are a member and if you are NOT getting the UU World, please let him know.
The project to raise funds in support of a CUUC business membership with Texas Public Radio is still short of its target by $150. If you are interested in supporting this important service to our community, please see John Bradshaw or Clem Chow. With your help we can reach our target. Thank you.
The board accepted with regret the resignation of Dianna Ross, who has a very heavy teaching load this semester. Nancy White agreed to be a trustee at large and was appointed. Thanks, Nancy.
There have been several requests to use the facilities. The board has now approved policies regarding building use by members and non-members. If you would like to use the church for a meeting or an event outside of Church-organized functions, please call Sue Minton, our Operations Coordinator. As soon as she can, these policies will be made available in the coffee room. There is also a monthly calendar in this room on the kiosk, so you can see if the space is available.
Barbara Coeyman attended our board meeting and was helpful with our discussion of who might perform weddings other than clergy or a justice of the peace. We agreed that when anyone requests to be married at our church and does not have an officiant, we will give them several references, including Barbara. When Barbara officiates, she meets with the couple 2 or 3 times prior to the ceremony. Barbara will see if there are others in the San Antonio area who perform this service.
The Board would like to remind all members that before you obligate any expenditure on behalf of the church, please make sure that you have secured agreement for such expenditure from the appropriate committee chair.
Join us for "Community Dinners" the weekend of Nov 14-15
Community Dinners are gatherings of 8 people at the home of a participant who has volunteered to host the event. Each Dinner will be with a different set of 8 people (couples are placed together, but you can participate as either an individual or a couple). The host prepares the main course and the other participants typically bring salad, vegetables and dessert. Dinners are scheduled for Nov. 14 or 15, Feb. 13 or 14 and May 14 or 15.
In order to rotate the groups, everyone who wants to participate is asked to complete the following form and get it to Sandi Boyd, either by e-mail to sandi.boyd@earthlink.net or us mail at 650 Evergreen Lane, New Braunfels, TX 78130. You may also complete a form at church on Sunday and give it to either Sandi or Steven. Please register by the 1st of November. Sandi will create guest lists for the hosts, who will contact everyone to schedule the dinner and determine what each person is bringing.
This is a wonderful way to get to know each other better and enjoy great CUUC conversations and food. Note: this activity is not meant to replace any of the other great groups that are getting together to share food and conversation.
