Nosotros, las congregaciones miembros de la Asociación UU, convenimos en afirmar y formentar el valor y la dignidad propria de cada persona.
On November 21, we'll have our traditional pre-Thanksgiving bread communion. For this service, we ask members to bring a loaf of bread (either homemade or store-bought, the origin doesn't matter) that has some significance for you. We'll share the bread, and more importantly, we'll tell the stories behind the loaves.
Thanksgiving dinner will be held at CUUC on Thursday November 25th at 3:00 PM. Please sign up in the church or call Nancy White 210-650-4785 if you plan to come and let her know what you plan to share with everyone. Bring your family and friends!
On November 21, as part of our bread communion service, we'll have a collection of food for the San Antonio Food Bank. Please bring your nonperishable items to the church; they'll be delivered to the Food Bank for you. The "most wanted items" at the Food Bank include canned beans, canned soups, macaroni and cheese, pasta, peanut butter, rice, and tuna.
Invariably hilarious and poignant, Elizabeth Ellis is a repeated favorite at the National Storytelling Festival and other events from Utah to New Zealand. A recipient of the Circle of Excellence Award, she shares traditional tales of Appalachia and Texas, as well as stories of heroic American women, but her personal stories are arguably the best. A nurturing and inspiring coach, she leads workshops that are both practical and visionary. With Loren Niemi, she co-authored Inviting the Wolf In: Thinking About Difficult Stories. Ms. Ellis is in San Antonio to present both a workshop and concert for the San Antonio Storytellers Association, and she'll be presenting a service for us as well!
A second Covenant Group will begin meeting this month. We will follow the covenant group format, with special focus on sharing experiences and exploring ways to live life more simply. We plan to meet twice a month. If you are interested in joining, please let Ann Bodine (abodine@utsa.edu, 690-3124) know what day(s) you prefer to meet and what day(s) are impossible for you.
An orientation for new and prospective members will be held on December 12 at 9:00 AM. Please put this event on your calendar if you've been visiting for a while and are thinking about membership or if you're a new member who has yet to attend an orientation. Dr. Coeyman will provide a general orientation to Unitiarian-Universalism, and church leaders will describe opportunities for getting involved in CUUC activities. Contact Henry Halff (henry@quiensabe.com, 210-493-7501) if you have questions.
Every year, the UU Service Committee sponsors Guest at Your Table, an opportunity for families to donate to UUSC programs as part of their holiday traditions. Guest at Your Table boxes will be available at the church on November 21, and this year members can also choose Guest at Your Table envelopes as well.

The next series selected for the Remarkable Film Group will feature the directorial and written works of John Sayles. The first film selected in this series will be "Matewan." The 1987 film features the performances of Chris Cooper and James Earl Jones and was a breakthrough film for John Sayles. The film will be shown at 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 21 at the church.
The second film in the John Sayles series for the Remarkable Film Group will be "The Secret of Roan Inish." This 1994 film further cemented John Sayles' reputation as a great story teller. The film also features superb cinematography. The film will be shown at 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 19 at the church.
The Remarkable Film Group will conclude its John Sayles series with "Lone Star." This 1996 film is set in a Texas border town and features Chris Cooper. The film will be shown at 6:00 PM on January 16, 2005 at the church.
Traditionally, CUUC has had a Christmas Eve service, and sometimes a Christmas party with caroling at the Bridge. This year, no one on the Worship Committee is available to present the service (although we'll be glad to help with the planning). If you'd like to have a Christmas Eve service and would be willing to lead and/or coordinate one, please contact Margaret Batschelet (typea45@swbell.net) or Mary Grace Ketner (mgteller@yahoo.com).
The high-school CUUCSA/FUUCSA YRUU is offering child a care service for parents to do their Holiday Shopping! (Or just a chance for you to relax while your children are having a good time.) This will be on Saturday, December 11 between 12:00pm and 6:00pm at the FUUCSA church. Snacks and plenty of fun will be provided. The charge is $15 for one child and $10 for each additional child. Don't miss this great opportunity to have an afternoon off while our high school youth entertain your children!
The monthly soup lunch offers opportunity for fellowship as well as raising funds for general operations of our church. The November soup lunch will not be held as we will have a Thanksgiving Dinner on November 25. The December soup lunch will be held on the 12th immediately after the service given by Rev. Barbara Coeyman. The CUUC Board will be hosting this soup lunch. The board has also decided to adjust the charge for soup lunch to the following: Adults: $4 each, Children: free. Visitors: free.
The Parents Covenant Group will meet the third Sunday of the month, after church for an hour and a half. Child care will be provided. For the meeting of November 21, 2004, the parents and others in the group will discuss the first chapter of Dr. Michele Borba's book, "Parents Do Make a Difference: How to Raise Kids with Solid Character, Strong Minds, and Caring Hearts." If there are any questions, please contact the facilitator, June Kachtik, at 342-0135.
The Fair Trade Alliance is a network of congregations, community groups, and businesses united to promote Fair Trade products in the United States by educating consumers about Fair Trade, creating information networks, and organizing events to support Fair Trade. The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) is a member of the Fair Trade Alliance and has played an active role in supporting Fair Trade. We are inviting your congregation to join our Fair Trade Alliance and work to support socially and environmentally just global exchange.
One of the biggest events that Co-op America and our Alliance members are planning for this year is the Fair Trade Day of Supermarket Action on November 20th. The weekend before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest grocery shopping weekends of the year, and it is a great time to educate consumers and retailers about the benefits of Fair Trade. On this day, we will encourage consumers to add Fair Trade products to their holiday grocery lists and to ask their local supermarkets to carry Fair Trade products.
To find out what your congregation can do to take part in the November 20th Fair Trade Day of Supermarket Action, visit our website at http://www.fairtradeaction.org/nov20action.cfm. The website includes action suggestions for the weeks leading up to November 20th and November 20th itself. The website also includes educational materials to help you with your own November 20th event.
If your congregation is interested in joining the national Fair Trade Alliance, we will gladly provide you information and a membership form. Please email me at this email or Erin Gorman at erin@coopamerica.org, or call our office at (202) 872-5337 if you are interested in joining or if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
