Following the popular response to "The Bicycle Thief", the Remarkable Film Series will present "Open City," representing Italian Neorealism at 6:00 pm on Sunday, February 17 at the church. Italian neorealism covers a number of films made in the post WWII era and as Robert T. Eberwien states it in A Viewer's Guide to Film Theory and Criticism: "Neorealist films are characterized by a pronounced social consciousness on the part of their makers, a concern for the lower classes and their despair and squalor, and a stark realism of technique relying heavily on long takes and depth of field." "Open City was directed by Roberto Rossellini and released in 1945; it is widely regarded as one of the most important films in Italian cinema history. It covers the Italian Resistance's struggle against the Gestapo. It also marks the emergence of Anna Magnani in world cinema.
The city of Leon Valley will be holding its 13th annual Earthwise Living Day at the Leon Valley Community Center, 6427 Evers Road (near Poss Road and behind the Leon Valley Library), Saturday, February 23, from 9 am to 3 pm. Earthwise Living is a mostly indoor, environmentally friendly home and garden fair that is well worth the visit. Please call Loretta Van Coppenolle (492-4620) for more information.
Last weekend Jean Halff and I attended the annual UU Religious Education REtreat in association with the Leaders Development Conference for Youth in Hunt, TX at the perennially beautiful Mo Ranch. This provided us with the opportunity to connect with our UU District leaders, youth and other national educators. The conference was an electric mix of people generating intellectual, spiritual and social energy. The conference theme for religious educators was "Lessons on Loss" presented by a Jon K. Reid, PhD.
This conference allowed us to participate in a stimulating and loving community, to connect with old and new friends and most significantly to come away with renewed hope for the future of our young people. We got the impression that the leadership training given to our UU Youth was honest and empowering, allowing them to face critical life issues in a safe and intelligent environment.
Because of situations like this I have a renewed faith in our denomination and the RE programs we provide for our young people. There is something very special about being involved in a critical mass of Unitarian Universalist energy where the serious concerns of our churches and our world can be explored.
